The Brooklyn Flea is Missing Something Special: The Shadow Man

image

I was eight when I first saw one of these near my Granny’s place in Delaware. After a few years, they started popping up everywhere. I always called them the Shadow Men because they lurked in the shadows and scared the shit out of me.

Basically, the Shadow Men are wooden silhouettes of cowboys, painted black, and often adorned with a red bandana (nice touch). People lean them against their houses as a sort of scarecrow for humans! They’re usually placed further back on the property or in the backyard, leaning against a tree. The idea being that when it’s dark outside… the Shadow Man looks like a real shadow…of a REAL MAN. Or, the shadow of a REAL COWBOY MAN. But a Shadow Man, nevertheless. They’re fucking terrifying. I hope they’re still around!
